End of module self evaluation.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Throughout the visual language module i have come to realise i like making and crafting things. Before this module started i would have never developed any work into something paper based, which strangely is what my final outcome is. I feel i have learnt new and different ways in which to approach a brief. This module has helped me to look at the message behind the image and not just the way it looks, but also something simple can be really affective.
2. What approaches to methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
My main method of research have being through the development of paper and different ways in which i could use it to represent dance. When i had chosen my final idea, i had to  make sure the paper stock was suitable an the colour matched the dance style. There were many things i had to consider which i hadn't realized were necessary before. From this project i have also learnt that although we have weeks/months to do the project i should think i have ages to do the work and leave it, i should start and develop it as soon as i can, because with this module i still have so many ideas of which i have not had time to do or develop and they may have been more successful than the final outcome i have now. So through this i now finally realise i need to manage my time much better.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?
I would say the strength is the idea i chose to develop 'dance' because i love dancing and i am involved with the activity i know about it and can give more input, unlike a subject i didn't know in and out. I feel because of this i enjoyed the project more so wen i did find my idea i was able to work on it and enjoy it throughout. I think the actual final piece is a strength, i feel it works really well as an outcome. Each book labeling the dance, folding out as a dance.
4. What weakness can you identify in you work and how can you address these more fully? The weakness for my project would definitely be the research side, i really don't have much secondary research, throughout using 'dance' i have worked from the knowledge i have got and the images i have taken whilst dancing. I do not have any artist/designer research. Another weakness to my project would be, that i have no digital work everything is paper based, perhaps my outcome would have been completely different if i had explored a digital approach.
5.  Identify 5 things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
-artist/designer research.
-start my project sooner.
-try to develop all my ideas before continuing with just 1 route.
-once i have a final idea, do more tests and practices.
-test my concertina books on different paper stocks, for thickness.
6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
Attendance - 4
Punctuality - 4
Motivation - 3/4
Commitment 3/4
Quantity of work produced - 3
Quality of work produced - 3
Contribution to the group - 2

Dance Video - final piece.

Photographs and developments.

Patterns.

I am always doodling triangles so though i would put them into a proper pattern, i think they look really effective, i would like to develop this into a proper piece of my own work in the future rather than just on the photographs, i do not feel they work that well.

Video research

I love this video sooo much, i could sit an watch it for hours, i love the dance moves and how modern and funky it is, i want to join in :) which would be amaayzing if i could so something like this but obviously i cant with the time, so instead i can take the aspects i like from it. I really like the way the moves move with the music, so although mine will be a stop animation i can try and use this idea, as well as the modern funky dance moves.

Video research

These are my favorite adverts at the moment every time it comes on i want to get up an dance, it would be ace if we could get this affect with our video. The thing i most like about the advert is the mix between the old fashioned look an the new music, even though they are clearly years apart they flow so well together.

Final 4 Posters.

Screen Prints.

Quick ideas.

I made some quick sketches and put a few into photo shop to see how they worked, with the possibility of taking them to screen print.

How to ... overcome a phobia.

After my initial research of phobias, how to overcome them, why you have them and the different things you can do, i decided to approach the less severe phobias and look at positive reinforcement. Firstly i have look at different type faces, i wanted to go for the handwritten look, so it was more personal and looked as though you had written it 'you can do it!' thus adding to the statement, not just by saying it but feeling it as well.

Type cut outs.

Typography to work alongside posters.

Saul Bass

It was suggested to me, in my crit to look at Saul Bass in relation to my posters below, in order to make them more appealing and enjoyable to look at. As i wanted to stick with a simple 2 to 3 colour poster, similar to the style in which Saul Bass posters are. What i like about these posters are the block colour and the image working with the text, i need to look at adding text onto my posters to make them more engaging to someone who isn't a dancer and wouldn't necessarily understand them.

What is a line (research)

I really like this and have thought of creating a pattern something like this before however i do not feel its appropriate at the moment although i would really like to use this idea in the future.

Research - What is a line

I think this is quite pretty, i came across it just looking for dance illustrations looking at making my images a little more interesting, although  i think i want to keep my work paper based and cut shapes out.

Line drawings.

Dance Video

Just looking over some professional dance videos, i really want to be her :( i feel because i love dancing i will be able to get into the project a lot easier and enjoy it :) I would really like to capture the movement an flow of the dance in my work like in the video.

What is a line

It has been a while sooo... basically i am looking at a line of dance, i began with the basics of defining it and the movement and flow around the room, which would be the line you follow as you dance. I do feel this is so boring and there are so many more avenue to look at that i dropped this and looked into the movement 'line' of a dance. Since i have change my initial definition my ideas have taken of. I have started by drawing a line drawing of a shape\position in a dance, i have gone onto looking at cutting out these shapes on different stocks in small concertina books, so when they have been opened up they look like the dance is flowing through. At the same time i have made small posters which are meant to work together of a position in a dance, however they look plain at the moment so i intend on looking at typography to go with these.

How to overcome a phobia...

I have initially decided to start researching what a phobia is, as an all rounder and how you can over come a phobia on your own and through treatment. Its so hard because there are so many different types of phobia that this topic could vary so much. However from what i have researched i think i would like to look at 'Positive reinforcement' with the whole looking into the mirror an telling yourself YOU CAN DO IT! so we shall see i am going to look at it through typography i think this will look nice, so i plan to attend print down the road on monday :) Below are just a few example of fonts i like (from dafont.com) i quite like the idea of having the type looking handwritten going with the idea of the phobic saying it or writing it, like a personal approach, we shall see how things go with wood block first tho.

Recognition Day post card

Recognition Day

I decided to base my project on 'recognition of my mum.' I wanted to recognise the things that she does for me and give back or say thank you. I decided to do this through a set of images/photographs of tasks and jobs, small things that she does for me but mean so much. Hear are a few below.
