Photoshop leaflet.

For my photoshop leaflet i decided to recreate my patterns on photoshop rather than screen printing them i though this would be a really interesting way to see the difference between digital and screen prints of the same patterns. Through this i have decided it was defiantly the best choice to screen print the 100 patterns rather than digital as the overall effect is a more professional quality than digital.

Evaluation

The intentions for my book of 100, was to create a swatch 'like' book of cultural patterns. I focused on 10 cultures, drawing 5 individual patterns for each of the 10 cultures. I  began with the research i already had collected over christmas, but as this was not specifically focused on cultures i needed to expand my research. I began by going to my local learning and student library as well as the college library researching as many cultures as i could and picking the 10 i found most interesting; African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Celt. I also went to my Aunties house and took pictures drew from cultural ornaments and fabric she had, as she has travelled around the world. I got a large percent of my research from books, which really helped as the informed me of a larger variety of patterns within cultures not just what i already new or thought. I spent a large portion of my time, drawing the patterns themselves and an even longer time screen printing.  It was hard to fit in screen printing, as i could not start until i had at least half of the patterns drawn, but also the fact that i could only screen print at certain times an the recent wether conditions did not help with my difficulty getting too and from college. I  think there is a large amount of work on the final idea as i only spend 2 1/2 weeks on my final piece and research. If i had more time there are areas that i would have preferred to research and test further, but for the time i had available i feel it is a significant amount of work. If there was time for me to develop this further i would like to have, looked further into different binding methods as now the book is finished i do not like the bind i choose (japanese). I had difficulty binding because the book is so thick and the drill was too small, so i had to drill in 3 sections rather than all in one, which resulted in uneven holes creating great difficulty when sewing the book together. I would also have liked to test my prints on different paper stock as well as drawing 100 individual patterns. If i had the time and amenities to do this i would like to have created 10 individual books for the 10 patterns. The original idea behind my book was a swatch book of  cultural patterns, but i feel the bind lets this down. There is no specific audience, only to be aimed at people looking at cultures or patterns.

I have however moved on from my initial idea which was to create a floral based font. I did really enjoy this and would still really like to do this at some point however when i had my crit it was decided that my idea was too narrow an i should develop my research and idea further. For my final book, i decided to screen print rather than digital, although this process wold take much longer i decided that the quality of it and the look of it would be far higher quality and fit the theme and idea behind my book much better than digital. I did because of this come across many issues, to get my prints finished in time as i could on attend at certain times and did have to stay behind till 9  quite a few times, but i feel the end results of the prints are worth it.

Final Resolution

My final resolution is a japanese bound book containing 100 screen prints of cultural patterns.

Statement of intent

For the 'What is a line' brief i intend to look at the line of dance, the way in which a dancer moves around the dance floor the direction and paths that they take. I want to look at the opposites an difference in line between a male and female dancer, the different paths and positions they take and mark these out. I am going to investigate this through photographs and illustration. I am going to look at creating a manual/ book for a dance and within it show correct posture, foot work, direction and timing. I am going to begin looking at the shapes and movement of different dance types with the intention of ending in sequence dancing.

Binding

As the idea behind my book  is that its a swatch book, i really liek the idea of a japanese bind, with an open spine, the traditional look of a swatch book will i feel look really good with the book of cultural patterns.

10 cultures

After my brief the other week, i decided to look further at patterns in general. I looked at cultures, eras and nature. Once i had researched i decided i would be most interested to look at cultures, so i have chosen for my 100 project; 10 cultures: Africa, China, India, Korea, Japan, Egypt, Greece, Arabia, Persia and Celts. My aim was to created 5 individual patterns which related to each of the cultures, resulting with 50 patterns, with the time i had left is still a stretch as i wanted them to be detailed and not just look like they took 5 minuets. So once my patterns are drawn i intend to screen print them, using two colours one for the background and the second for the pattern. To make my book into '100' individual pieces of work, i was going to print on paper and then on fabric as the effect would be different and my intention for my book was for it to be like a swatch book or cultural patterns. But with the time and resource i had i couldn't. So i rethought and although it would make my screen printing process longer i have decided to print the individual patterns twice but in different colours. However where it is possible i am going to overlay the patterns so the look completely different, this will make the 100 more individual that them just being in different colours.

Swatch books and ways to bind my book.

 I really like the swatch book bind, however i feel i will have too manny patterns and the pages would get easily ruined, as i do not have the time to test this bind out on paper stock to see which works best, as the pages would get easily ruined, at the point in time i feel the japanese or coptic bind would work best, but before i try i want to make a small mockup of them both.

Floral typography

My initial idea for this brief was to create a font based on my floral patterns, i developed my letters from the Times New Roman font and then put my flowers and swirls onto the letter, i created several versions for each letter with the intention of taking part which looked best on the letter to make a final letter. I intended to use small letters and capital letters, numbers, punctuation and accents to make up the 100. After my crit last week we decided my idea was too narrow for the collection of patterns i did have. I decided go back to my patterns collected over Christmas and add to my my research with cultural patterns as suggested in my crit. Below are some of the letters i started with, i do still really like this idea and at some point would like to follow on with what i had started as i did enjoy it.

Statement of Intent.

I aim to look at pattern across different cultures around the world and from this create me own. The cultural patterns will be shown mostly through theme and colour, i intend to choose 10 different countries and create 5 different patterns for each. One i have done this i intend to screen print them twice, once on paper and once on fabric. I didn't have much information on individual cultures, so i have now though books, the internet and fabric samples found different cultural patterns to help me distinguish their individual pattern themes and colour. I shall then draw and common patterns to create my own 5 bigger patterns for each country. 

I intend to start my process by hand drawing my images in pen and developing these into screen prints on fabric and paper, this will give the effect of a sample book which i what my overall intentions for the book are. My plans are to draw and create my patterns over the weekends and the night and to screen print when is available through the day and drop in. I will develop my skills in screen printing as at the moment they are quite basic. I shall also gain knowledge on the cultures i intend to look at. 

Throughout this project i feel i should randomly ask people what culture these patterns they think are form and what colours they think relate to this subject, as i want these patterns to contrast from culture to culture. I shall evaluate this in my sketch book next to the patterns. I shall also evaluate my work through crits and group work, as i can get feedback on how effective my patterns are and how my project is working.

Pattern

Over Christmas i collected various types of patterns that i liked. I also visited an old stately home 'Temple Newsam' there were so many varieties of pattern in just one place hear, i photographed wallpaper, fabric furniture, and the architecture from the building. I found the most interesting an intricate pattern samples from hear. In my collection of pattern, i find the floral ad decor patterns the most interesting and would love the chance to expand on these with my own ideas.

What is a Book?

A physical object consisting of a number of pager bound together. It is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment, or other material, usually fastened together to hinge at one side.  Within a book, a single sheet is known asa leaf, and each side of the leaf is know as a page. There is not just a physical form of a book, but also an electrical known as an e-book. Generally books and separated between fiction and non-fiction, books can also be distinguished between hard-back with a stiff binding and paperback which have flexible covers and tend to be less durable. An alternative to a paperback is a glossy cover or a dust cover found on magazines or comic books. You can also find spiral bound books examples of these are, teachers manuals and puzzle books. Book Binding is the physical process of assembling a book, from a number of folded or unfolded sheets of paper or other material..

Self evaluation

The problem we identified was that Leeds College of Art and Design logo does not represent the identity of the institution. Our primary research consisted of, quantitative and qualitative questionnaires, and interview with the principle, and two surveys. Firstly we conducted a pilot survey of 50 students and staff, 84% said in their opinion the logo doesn't represent the college accurately. We later extended that this survey tho the whole of the Blenheim walk college and the vernon street building, we gathered evidence of 100 people, the results showed that 82% felt it didn't and only 18% thought it did. We went on to gather our quantitative and qualitative evidence. The qualitative (open) questionnaire asked "what is your first opinion on the LCAD logo" comments such as, traditional, roman mosaic, old and dated were given, non of which are positive comments towards the logo. On a whole the general comments given on the representation of the college logo were that, i didn't work due to colour, old fashioned, dated and it didn't represent all aspects of design. The quantitative (closed) questionnaire enabled us to collect statistics and give evidence through pie charts and graphs. When students and staff were asked 76% thought the present logo was out of date. We asked weather the present logo was: 40% thought it was dated, 36% thought it was traditional, 8% lifeless, 8% distinctive, and 8% unclear. When i spoke to people, feedback i was given showed that people thought the mosaic logo, fitted in with the Vernon street building and found it matched the style of the building and interior, whereas they didn't feel that it matched the new modern Blenheim walk building. Infact the logo is barley seen on the Blenheim walk building its just a print of the mosaic logo. The second survey we conducted, we asked people to rate in order of their preference their favorite to least 7 different art college logos including our own. Students rated our college in 5th place. In 1st place was The university of Brighton and last place was The university of west England. Although we were not least favorite we were closer to the bottom of the league than the top. Our final piece of primary research was answers to questions we sent to the principle. This information was very informative, hear he gave us history, and opinions for and against changing the logo, not just based on his opinions, but also the gouvenors and the colleges best interests. He also supplied us with information regarding the change of name for the college.

Our secondary research started with looking at history of the logo and the college, we found a book in the college called "Past into Present" by Rebecca Lowe. The principle also provided us with a special copy of the college book all about the College mosaic, how it was founded, architecture and history into the college. The Principle also

 informed us of a few other small pieces of interest as to how the mosaic logo was designed. Surprisingly the logo was deigned by a graphic design teacher over a weekend in 1992. The principle wanted to establish a link between our histor

y whilst trying to rebuild the college academically. The principle feels that the logo was appropriate to the time it was produced, but is possible not fitting now. We also researched into other institutions that have changed their logo and their success and weakness found along the way. The principle also provided us with a few more recent example in his feedback to us.

I found the feedback from the principle most interesting, he extended the answers he gave us, which we were able to use for extra research when backing us our problem, he also welcomed the idea of a student designing a new logo for the colleg

e, which was also our solution to the problem. I also found useful the quantitative research as you could show easier through graphical imagery our results, creating a larger impact. However it was quite hard to write questions which were not leading. Next time if i were to do this in future, i think more time needed to be spend in making sure the questions were written appropriately as this was a weakness to our questionnaire. To overcome this problem, i will make sure it is checked by someone other than myself. It was hard to find Secondary quantitative research, i think however this is depended on the topic we were researching into. Next time, to find out this data if appropriate we could look at weather anyone h

as done this before and see what results they got from their research. This would have been really useful to have and interesting to compare the different years from one another. The method which proved most difficult would be qualitative primary research, it was hard to make sure people were giving an honest opinion rather than what they felt they should say, to stay loyal to the college. If things were to be done differently next time, firstly i would research into previous groups and years researching the same problem as us, secondly i would like to spend longer as a group putting the results together to present them, third

ly i would research out of college ground, get people who don't know the college's opinion's, fourth i would try and make our solution into a real competition, so we could actually try and have new ideas for a new logo and finally i would present all  the information and more to the principle to present to the gouvenors to change the logo of the college to make a difference.

Define Identity.

Our group came up with the problem : Leeds College of Art and dEsign logo does not represent the identity of the college. We needed evidence and proof of this so we did a pilot survey of mixed staff and pupils, the results were that 84% of people asked said that the logo didnt represent the college. We then went on to gather a large amount of research to back up our problem through:

• Questionnaires - open and closed
• Survey ranking LCAD logo against other logos
• Interview with principle
• Historical research about the college
• Multiple choice questions.

Our results concluded that in the opinion of people we asked the logo did not represent the college, through various reasons, such as it reminded them of a roman mosaic, it did not stand for all areas of art and design, the colour also seemed to be a big issue with some people. The appropriate answer to our problem was to create an open competition to design a new college logo.

100 photos

I choose to take all of my photos when i went to Blackpool, competing in a dance competition. All of the pictures reflect this, they range from decor, textiles and the architecture of the building. I took a large portion of the photos in the Ballroom as it is so decretive and has such a large history. It is also meaningful to me through my dancing, i have many memories from the Ballroom in the tower. I really like the images of the decor in the tower i think these work best, i like that the detail brings the room alive not just what is happening on the floor but all around.
